The once McNally SU Major Events Coordinators, Jane and Andrew, strikes again with a very creative and well planned birthday party. There was much suspense and build up leading up to this day and rightly so. With hints of a city wide scavenger hunt, I packed my trusty tablet pc that has a digitialized map of Edmonton and hurried my way to Jane's house to meet sharply at 1 pm. In fact, I was in such a hurry that there was a roadkill casualty.
Not everybody arrived at 1 pm and after waiting for the arrival of Mack Male who got lost in traffic, the competition began.
We formed into three separate teams: Team Roadkill (in honor of the squirrel) which consisted of me, Violet, Kimmi, Mr. Awesome, Candice and Enrong; Team Black (I assume the Black refers to their poor hygiene) consisting of
Mack, the twins,
Megan, and Greg, and Team Lucky consisting of Warren, Natalie, Fel, Yili and Andrea.
In the first task, each team had to illustrate their artistic prowess in a pie decorating contest. Each team was given two pies with no restrictions as to what can be used to decorate the pies.
Team Lucky came up with a
very nice star on one pie and a printed out picture of Andrew in a new car on the other pie.
Such bribery! Team Black came up with something not so
G rated.
Thinking from Team Black's perspective, I believe they separated the picture onto two pies to illustrate the range.
+1 point for thinking a little deeper. -50000 points for the picture itself.
Our team combined the pies and created a
snow hill to reflect the snowboarding/skiing season. In the end, we tied Team Lucky for first.
The second task sent us speeding across the city in a scavenger hunt! Some of the items were quite creative and others were more like dares. I'm just glad nobody decided to take up the dare of ripping out my house mailbox and burning the contents. It reminded me of the episode "One Tree Hill" I recently saw. But before the game started, we were already sabotaged as one page of our item list was missing. I suspect Team Black has something to do with this. In any case, it was a long fought out battle with some very interesting and insane occurrences along the way. Our first stop brought us to a McDonald where Kimmi grabbed an application form and a McDonald's bib. While we waited for her, the rest of us went to take a picture of us eating snow. The snow was very hard and I don't remember which member did it, but somebody decided that it be a good idea to soften up the snow with their shoe and then eat the once white snow. GENIOUS I TELL YOU! Our second stop brought us to West Edmonton Mall or rather almost West Edmonton Mall as I decided to follow the bus right into their transit zone! It was quite funny at the time as we were in a minivan surrounded by transit busses. Definitely scored a few looks from the bus drivers and pedestrians. There, Kimmi and I picked up thrown away transit bus tickets on the ground, trash cans and even the trash cans on the buses. It was definitely a One Tree Hill scene as ALL the passengers on the bus watched in horror as we picked through the trash bins. There was this one lady that even walked right up to the front and threw in her dirty kleenex WHILE I was picking through the trash! I was quite close to giving her my signature backhand. In any case, the bus drivers were cooperative and some even found stacks of old bus transfers. After grabbing a handful of bus transfers, we left the scene as quietly as possible and undertook the task of finding a parking spot. We wasted much time and in the end, Violet and I went to find a parking spot while the other team members headed in. I must say I am impressed with our team members as by the time we met up, a handful of items have already been crossed off. Particularly, I must congratulate Kimmi on walking into Moxie’s and coercing a customer into handing her their Moxie’s napkin WITH the utensils still inside. I would almost call this shoplifting except for the fact Kimmi will undoubtedly return it if hasn't already. Next, we eliminated the items that required our entire group. After that, we put our heads together and with some quick math figured out that the key to winning this is bus transfers and getting people to sing happy birthday over the phone. So again, we split off into groups with Violet and Kimmi hunting for willing singers, Candice and Enrong to complete the various tasks, and me and Mr. Awesome to whore the bus stations. Violet and Kimmi were quite successful and found some interesting strangers to perform the birthday song including a cowboy and the “Von Trapp Family”.
Candice and Enrong scored us a few hundred points on their run and me and Mr. Awesome just pillaged the bus station like there was no tomorrow. We even saw the same bus driver twice and got scolded by one Chinese bus driver who was suspicious of our activity. In the end, armed with over 500 bus transfers and countless birthday singing, we came out on top with a few hundred points to spare! It was definitely a lot closer than I thought.
Next, we had a dinner at Blue Chicago followed by Shrek 2 at Jane’s house. The night was coming to a blissful end until Mack decided to pickup the hula hoop. It was not a pretty sight to see - comical yet horrific at the same time. Comical in the sense that when Mack was trying to skip, he would whack his head with the hoop, killing a few brain cells. The more he skipped, the more he whacked his head and the more his mental capacity deteriorated until he was just frighteningly ecstatic with skipping. One thing is for sure, it worked a lot faster than alcohol!
All in all, I really enjoyed the party and once again, Happy Birthday to Jane and Andrew!
