Ask someone like
Mack if he likes Coke or Pepsi more and he will respond by opening a can of Coke and chase it down with rum. But is Coke really better? According to the Pepsi taste challenge, Pepsi appears to be the better tasting pop but then why is it that Coke remains dominant? In an
article published late last year, neuroscientist Read Montague took MRI scans of the brain while people participated in the Pepsi taste challenge and discovered something interesting:
Without knowing what they were drinking, about half of them said they preferred Pepsi. But once Montague told them which samples were Coke, three-fourths said that drink tasted better, and their brain activity changed too. Coke "lit up" the medial prefrontal cortex -- a part of the brain that controls higher thinking. Montague's hunch was that the brain was recalling images and ideas from commercials, and the brand was overriding the actual quality of the product.
It would appear that Pepsi is actually quite comparable in quality yet in the end, I would pick Coke over Pepsi any day. This effect of neuromarketing is already starting to get noticed with talks of advertisements being tailored using MRI scans to determine the most effect propaganda. Sounds like I shouldn't let my kids watch TV. Scary eh?
Anyways, who is up for Dennys? Because Dennys is clearly the
BEST late night diner in the world!
