Talk about lots of things happening in a few days! After coming back from Calgary (got back around 2 am), I had to do some last minute preparation for the
Telus Skins Game in Whistler that was starting the next day. In the end, I was given a plane ticket and left the same day with Greg and Wylie to ensure things went smoothly. I left Edmonton around 10 pm and got to Vancouver a little past 11 pm and in order to make it to the golf tournament, we rented a vehicle (a Pacifica) and drove immediately to Whistler. The drive to Whistler in the dark to say the least was quite scary. We were driving on a one lane road and with no street lamps and twists and turns going up all the way to Whistler, visibility was at best 30 ft! As Wylie said (also our driver), our chance of survival was about 83% but he later revised that to 79% when Greg removed his sandals and introduced a new smell into the car. haha!
We got to Whistler around 1:30 am and settled at the
Fairmont Chateau Whistler only to wake up 3-4 hrs later to head to the golf tournament. Unlike the
Telus Edmonton Open, we didn't get a chance to do an orientation with the caddies or staff members a week ahead so things were a little hectic at first trying to organize the blackberries and give a quick tutorial to the players (We only provided the blackberries for the morning tournament). But after the initial rush was over, I watched Jack Nicklaus , Stephen Ames, Vijay Singh and John Daly practice driving on one of the holes and boy can they drive it really far! Having such high profile players at the tournament, there was much more media coverage from radio stations to TSN. By noon, when the actual Skins tournament was starting, the golf course was filled with thousands of people. Cameras were all over the place and TSN broadcasted live. We watched the PGA pros tee off from the first hole and then we left for lunch as it was impossible to find a good viewing spot with the amount of people there.
We went to a pub near the main square of Whistler and there we loaded up on wings, ribs, snacks and drinks to celebrate our success for the day. We all took a round of tequilla shot and I complimented it with 2 pints of beer. We did a little exploring aftewards and headed back to our hotel where we settled - you guessed it - at the bar. At this point, Wylie came up with a good joke. There was a piano in the bar and he wanted me to play something very amateur like just to see the look on people's faces (plus the fact we were in a Fairmont hotel) and then I would perform something worth listening to to redeem myself. So I went to the piano, still quite red from all the drinks, and started off with chopsticks and then moved onto twinkle twinkle little stars. For both songs, I intentionally hit the wrong notes every now and it did produce a few looks from people! Meanwhile, Greg and Wylie were laughing their heads off and feeling a little embarrassed, I ended it off with Tango from True Lies and a little bit of Chopin Polonaise. Quite funny!
We went back to our room to sleep the alcohol off and then went to Keg for supper. We were still quite full from the lunch earlier but the food at the Keg was really good and we managed to finish it all off. Today is definitely an awesome, fast pace day with many laughters and good times! Tomorrow or rather today is the last day of the tournament but I won't be joinng Greg and Wylie as I'm heading home early (plane leaves at 9:45 am) for my other commitments. Sure wish I could stay longer as this has got to be one of my shortest trips ever! Best of luck to you two! Check out the
pictures!
