Over the past year, Google has built up quite a reputation from its software labs and with the recent release of
Google Talk, an instant messaging client, I had high hopes for the software. Talk about disappointment. Even for a beta, I think this software was released prematurely. Other than having a look that resembles programs on Apple computers, Google talk doesn't even perform the most basic functions. In fact, it is so lacking that the instant messaging software,
Java Instant Messaging (JIM), I developed in my course project (with 2 others) even rivals Google Talk. Here is what my program offers:
- Profile pictures (like msn)
- Contact management like adding, removing, and blocking
- AES Encryption communication
- Multiplatform - runs on linux or windows
Google Talk offers only single user chat, decent voice chat capabilities and contact management similar to JIM or most IM clients. Essentially, if Google Talk and JIM were the only IM clients left on the world, I would use mine.
