I was browsing CNET News and came across an
article about a company whose headquarters was located in New Orleans. The company,
DirectNIC, is a domain registration company which we (Golf Score Central) use to register many of our domains including
www.golfscorecentral.com,
www.beatcancernow.com and among others. Learning that their datacenter is located in New Orleans, it worried me that our sites would go down but after reading the article and the
blog of one of the employees that stayed behind, you start to get an appreciation for the robustness of data centers and the people who work them. From CNET:
Armed with food, water, a diesel generator, a camera and at least one firearm, five employees of New Orleans-based DirectNIC have been holed up since just before the storm blew in nearly a week ago on the 10th and 11th floors of the building that houses their headquarters.
From the
blog, you can see how their initial confidence when the storm started rolling in turned into fear and how they dealt with the problems that soon ensued. From multiple OC3 connections cutting out, shortage of fuel for their generators, difficulty of getting fuel dropped to threats from looters and arsonists - you name it, its absolutely amazing! They also make trips around their area to chat with others and take pictures - definitely worth a visit if you're initerested in learning more about the sitaution in New Orleans.
