State of the Blogosphere Part II

In Part II of the State of the Blogosphere, David Sifry focuses more on the growing trend of the blogosphere as media.

  • Mainstream media like New York Times, Washington Post, CNN continue to dominate the most linked category with 40,000 to 60,000 links in January alone. However, sites like Boing Boing and Engadget are making inroads with number of links already exceeding CBC, Times and Forbes.
  • According to historical data, the effect that highly linked sites continue to be popular as long as they make regular posts (aslo known as network effect) is found to be weak.
  • The authoratative blogs, which he has dubbed "The Magic Middle", contains 20-1000 links and makes up just 155,000 blogs. Compared to the total number of 27.9 million blogs in the blogosphere, this magic middle is only 0.56%!
