Last Saturday, I went to see
STOMP at the Jubilee Auditorium with Sharon, Annie and May and it was quite an interesting experience! Unlike other bands, STOMP is a band that uses anything to everything from brooms, bags, water bottles to sinks to make rhythm. The set is designed to look like just the side of a street where people come to interact with no real plot or dialogue.
I really enjoyed the opening scene which began with one person sweeping the street and was soon joined by many others sweeping in their own rhythm to produce a chorus of rhythmic sounds. It was very impressive yet a little annoying at first because it's like watching a movie with voice overs - you can't seem to connect what you hear to what you see. Although impressive, after an hour of rhythm it did get a little redundant. It didn't pick up until the end when they used trash bins and trash cans (think of the well known THX commercial we see at the theatres) to finish with a bang. I think the concert would have been much better if they experimented more with
instruments that produced different tones of sounds to make music but nevertheless, it was a must see experience.
It was also my first time at Jubilee since the renovations. It looks like they added more lighting equipment and extended the balconies along the side to add more seating. They also changed the color scheme and all the chairs to be much more modern-looking. I'm glad my graduation will be at the Jubilee! Cheers for not graduating last year!
